Equipping Teams to Be Inclusive & Understand, and Value Diverse Perspectives
Are you an Inclusive Employer?

This week – 23rd to 29th September – is National Inclusion Week. We don’t think it’s a coincidence that it also coincides with International Happiness at Work Week.
Equipping teams to understand and value diverse perspectives is crucial for building a truly inclusive workplace. Here’s how HR can take an active role in this:
- Training and Education: Regularly offer training that covers unconscious bias, cultural competency, and inclusive communication. Equip teams with the tools to recognise their own biases and how these may impact interactions.
- Facilitate Open Dialogue: Encourage open conversations about diversity within teams. Create safe spaces where employees can share experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other without fear of judgement.
- Mentorship and Buddy Programs: Implement mentorship or buddy systems that pair employees from different backgrounds or experiences. This fosters understanding and learning across cultures and perspectives.
- Celebrating Differences: Encourage teams to celebrate cultural events, different perspectives, and experiences. This builds a sense of belonging and highlights the value of diverse viewpoints.
- Diverse Leadership: Ensure leadership teams are diverse. When employees see diversity at all levels, especially in leadership, it helps reinforce that inclusion is more than just words—it’s in action.
- Inclusive Communication Practices: Teach teams how to engage in inclusive communication, ensuring everyone has a chance to contribute and feel heard. This includes being mindful of how meetings are run and making space for quieter voices.
- Ongoing Feedback: Regularly gather feedback on inclusion efforts and address areas for improvement. Make this part of your culture so employees know inclusion is a continuous priority.
By empowering teams to understand and value diverse perspectives, HR can help foster an environment where innovation thrives, and employees feel genuinely included.
